Introduction of the Lab/ Research Field

The Electromechanobiology lab aims to push the boundaries of Mechanobiology by incorporating bioelectric effects. It uses a systems biology approach and investigates the interplay between 1) biochemical pathways, 2) endogenous electric fields and 3) cellular mechanics in driving cellular processes (e.g. migration, apoptosis. division, and differentiation) and ultimately tissue homeostasis. Interdisciplinary tools such as molecular/cell biology techniques, advanced microscopy/image analysis, microfluidic/microfabricated systems, biomechanical/electrical parameter measurements, and physical theories will be used to dissect the problems from different angles and in different systems (in vitro/ex vivo/in vivo). Knowledge generated from the lab will help understand the formation of health/disease states and be used to develop novel tissue/stem cell engineering applications.

Job Description

Position: Postdoctoral Fellow (2-3 positions).

Start date: Feb/March 2022.


Each Postdoctoral Fellow will lead a different project with close involvement of the PI. He/she is expected to collaborate with people within and outside of the lab to solve problems not tractable within a single lab. Project directions include, but are not limited to:

1. Investigating molecular mechanisms of cell-electrical flux coupling;

2. Studying relation between stem cell fate and electromechanical parameters;

3. Dynamical control of stem cell fate, potentially for stem cell therapy/medical applications;

4. Investigating the physiological role of electrical fluxes in organs/in vivo systems.


1. Motivated, open-minded, collaborative, with solid scientific training;

2. Expertise in one or more techniques/areas below (preferable but not limited to):

1) Molecular/cell biology (e.g. optogenetics);

2) Stem cell biology (e.g. embryonic stem cell, hemogenic endothelia);

3) Bioengineering/Microfluidics//Electrical Engineering;

4) Biophysics (e.g. collective cell dynamics/mechanics/electricity measurement);

5) Coding/Machine Learning (e.g. for microscopy control, image/object detection/classification).

Other requirements:

Having obtained or about to obtain a Ph.D. degree, aged under 35.

Compensation and Benefits

The research team offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applications for relevant projects and programs will be encouraged and supported.

Postdoc(s) selected for China Postdoctoral Science Foundation or Zhejiang Province Selected Funding for Postdoctoral Research Projects will be entitled to further receive a supporting fund of the same amount from the Hangzhou municipal government.

Postdoc(s) who work in Hangzhou on a full-time basis after completing their postdoctoral research will be eligible for applying an allowance of 400,000RMB from the Hangzhou municipal government.
