Solid State Ionics (SSI) Laboratory
Crystals are like people: it is the defects that make them interesting! I am excited to contribute to the multidisciplinary studies with fellow Westlakers, creating new research directions from the “defects” inside each of us.
Biography
Dr. Qiyang Lu was born and raised in Huai’an, Jiangsu, China. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University (2012) and his PhD degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, 2018), both in Materials Science and Engineering. His PhD work was awarded best PhD thesis award from MIT. He did his postdoctoral study at Stanford University with a joint fellowship at Advanced Light Source, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He received several prestigious awards, including Graduate Student Gold Award from Materials Research Society and Ross Coffin Purdy award from American Ceramic Society.
Research
The research in our group focuses on the fundamental understanding and new applications in the field of solid state ionics (SSI), applied surface science and solid state electrochemistry. Our current research interests include:
1. Designing mixed electronic and ionic conducting oxide thin films for reversible solid state electrochemical cells;
2. Understanding the role of ionic defects in determining reaction kinetics in electrocatalysis;
3. Prototyping neuromorphic computing devices enabled by ion transport and intercalation.
Opening: Our group is recruiting postdoctoral scholars, PhD students as well as research associates. We welcome highly motivated researchers with backgrounds of materials science, condensed matter physics, inorganic/surface chemistry or related field (not essential for PhDs and RAs) to join us.
