Biography:


Bin Tan is currently a chair professor and vice-chair of Department of Chemistry in Southern University of Science and Technology. His academic achievements are recognized in numerous national awards such as The first prize of Guangdong Natural Science Award, WuXi AppTec Research Award in Life Chemistry, The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and National Ten-thousand Program Leading Talent. He has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2022.

He received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Nanyang Technological University in 2010 with Prof. Guofu Zhong. He then did postdoctoral studies at The Scripps Research Institute with Prof. Carlos F. Barbas III. At the end of 2012, he started his independent research career as an Associate Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology. His research focuses on catalytic asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral compounds and asymmetric organocatalysis. Many original research achievements have been made in the field of organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral compounds. So far, he has already published more than 100 research papers in international top journals, including Science, Nat. Chem. (3), Nat. Catal. (3), J. Am. Chem. Soc. (8), Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. (16), Nat. Commun. (8), Chem (2), Acc. Chem. Res. (2), Chem. Rev. and so on.

Abstract:


Axially chiral compounds occupy the interest of many chemist researchers because of their frequent appearance in biologically active compounds and in successful chiral ligands used for asymmetric catalysis. This relevance has driven studies on the catalytic asymmetric construction of these molecular structures, which culminate in substantial progress being achieved. However, most of the available synthetic strategies are enabled by metal catalysis, whereas organocatalytic methods have only emerged recently.  We describe some developments from our group in organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral skeletons. The strategies revolve around enantioselective cross coupling of two aryl counterparts, atroposelective aromatic ring formation, oxidative dearomatization strategy, direct functionalization of alkyne, desymmetrization and so on. In this course, we discovered simple alkenes that display axial chirality and established their first asymmetric preparation. These findings illuminate a new direction in the development of axial chiral chemistry.
