Qi-Lin Zhou
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences
Professor of Chemistry, Nankai University
Future Science Prize---Physical Science (2018)
First Prize of the National Natural Science Award (China 2019)
Qi-Lin Zhou graduated from Chemistry Department, Lanzhou University in 1982 and received PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (under the supervision of Prof. Yao-Zeng Huang) in 1987. After several years of postdoctoral research in Europe (with Prof. Klaus Müllen and Prof. Andreas Pfaltz) and USA (with prof. Michael Doyle), he joined the Institute of Fine Chemicals, East China University of Science and Technology in 1996. In 1999, he moved to College of Chemistry, Nankai University as a Cheung Kong Scholar. He was elected academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009, and vice president of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) in 2010. His research interests include organometallics, asymmetric catalysis, organic synthetic methodology, and synthesis of biologically active compounds. He has published more than 280 papers in chemistry journals, 16 books and chapters, and 34 patents. He won the Prize for Creation in Organic Synthesis (CCS, 2005), Yao-Zeng Huang Prize of Organometallics (CCS, 2006), the Prize of Chiral Chemistry (CCS, 2012), Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (2013), Novatis Lecturer at the Scripps Research Institute (2014), Boehringer-Ingelheim Lecturer at California Institute of Technology (2017), Future Science Prize---Physical Science (2018), and the first Prize of the National Natural Science Award (China 2019). He is associate editor of CCS Chemistry, and the editorial and advisory board members of 15 international journals including Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Chem. Sci. and J. Org. Chem.
Abstract:
Chiral catalysts are the key for the catalyzed asymmetric synthesis. In the last half century, many chiral catalysts have been developed and were widely used in the asymmetric synthesis of chiral compounds. However, most of the reported chiral catalysts showed high activity and enantioselectivity for limited reactions, sometime for only limited substrates. Very few chiral catalysts afforded satisfactory activity and enantioselectivity for a wide range of mechanistically unrelated reactions. In the last two decades, we developed a new type of chiral ligands with a rigid spirobiindane skeleton. The metal catalysts containing chiral spiro ligands exhibited excellent activity and enantioselectivity in a wide range of reactions. This lecture will present the design and synthesis of chiral spiro catalysts and their applications in metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions.
