Westlake University, a new type of international research university focusing on science and engineering and located in Hangzhou, China, has been approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education to recruit its first class of undergraduate students for Fall 2022. Westlake will admit a small number of select Chinese and international students for the inaugural class.

Westlake Undergraduate Program

Program Overview

All courses at Westlake are taught in English. The Westlake undergraduate Science and Engineering programs combine rigorous, broad-based fundamentals with in-depth specializations to prepare our students for the future. Students also take courses in the humanities, social sciences, communication, and other areas. Undergraduates have a common curriculum during their first two years and declare a major at the end of their second year. Initially offered majors include Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Electronic and Information Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering, with more major options being developed. Westlake exemplifies the highest international standards in higher education by adopting the best practices of leading universities worldwide.

• Research Opportunities

Westlake University engages undergraduates in world-changing research from the very beginning of their studies. Our globally-leading faculty-student ratio guarantees that each student receives individualized faculty guidance and the singular chance to pursue research matching their interests. Westlake undergraduates have access to Westlake’s more than 150 state-of-the-art laboratories shared across different disciplines. Through hands-on inquiries and immersive experiences, students actively acquire skills needed for career success and leadership. Undergraduates will also have opportunities for direct admission to the Ph.D. program.

• Study Abroad

An important feature of the Westlake undergraduate program is a required study abroad experience for up to one year. Students will gain a deeper global perspective by studying at one of our partner universities outside of China. To date, Westlake has signed study abroad and exchange agreements with approximately 20 top universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Asia; more partner institutions will be available in the future.

The globally recruited Westlake faculty are all internationally recognized leaders in their fields, known for setting the agenda in their specialty, pioneering new areas, or being rising young scholars with promising academic futures. Westlake undergraduates will reside and study at our new, modern, Yungu Campus, and join one of four distinct residential colleges connecting students from various cultural backgrounds and academic disciplines. At Westlake, different interests and ideas are represented by multiple types of student groups, allowing individuals to explore, create, and lead in their own ways.
