1. Introduction

Westlake University is a new type of research university based in the stunning and historic Chinese city of Hangzhou. Westlake champions academic freedom, research excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and international collaboration. We have three schools, all pursuing cutting-edge research: School of Life Sciences, School of Science, and School of Engineering. 2. Eligibility

1) International applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, have earned a high school diploma or be in the senior year of high school with good academic standing progressing towards a high school diploma, and meet our academic and English proficiency requirements.

2) English proficiency requirements：IELTS: 6.5 or above/ TOEFL 95 or above. Native English speakers or those who have attended a high school for at least two years where English is the main language of instruction are exempted.

3) International applicants must meet the eligibility requirement as prescribed in the Document No. 12 (2020) by the Ministry of Education of the PRC:

In cases where an applicant was once a resident of Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan and has acquired foreign citizenship through an immigration process, the applicant must:

(i) have held a valid foreign passport or certificate of nationality for at least four years (up to April 30 of the year of enrollment at Westlake University); and 

(ii) during the most recent four years (up to April 30 of the year of enrollment at Westlake University) have lived outside of Chinese Mainland/Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan for at least two years (subject to the entry and exit record, if a student has stayed outside of Chinese Mainland/Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan for nine months or longer during one year, it is equivalent to one year).

In cases where an applicant has acquired foreign citizenship at birth and one or both applicant’s parents hold Chinese citizenship, the parent or one of the parents with Chinese citizenship must have obtained permanent residence in a foreign country prior to the birth of the applicant, and the applicant must:

during the most recent four years (up to April 30 of the year of enrollment at Westlake University) have lived outside of Chinese Mainland/Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan for at least two years (subject to the entry and exit record, if a student has stayed outside of Chinese Mainland/Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan for nine months or longer during one year, it is equivalent to one year).

5. Assessment and Admission

The Westlake University Undergraduate Admissions Committee will review the applicant’s materials to assess their suitability for studying at Westlake, followed by an interview to assess the applicant’s academic background and potential, English proficiency, communications skills, creativity, and character. Interviews may be conducted in person or online.The admissions decision is based on a holistic evaluation of the applicant.

6. Admissions Timetable

Application deadline is May 10, 2022. All application decisions are estimated to be communicated by end of May 2022.

7. Fees and Scholarships

Application fees for 2022 are waived for all applicants.

Accommodation Fee: 9,000-11,000 RMB/year

Tuition: 350,000 RMB/year

Westlake has a need-blind admissions policy. Full and partial tuition scholarship programs based on both merit and financial need are available.
