Research purposes and contents:

Research work will revolve around "biological size, function, manipulation and disease", relying on our previous research of the organ growth control, the basis of the work in genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, physical methods and combined with artificial intelligence, clinical medicine, neuropsychology, pharmaceutical chemistry to carry out the basic theory and translation application research. The specific research includes the following three purposes: 1. The role and mechanism of growth regulation in drosophila melanogasters; 2. Biological functions and mechanisms of mammalian organ size and growth; 3. Research and development of disease diagnosis and treatment through organ size regulation mechanism.

Key Laboratory of 3D Micro/Nano Fabrication and Characterization of Zhejiang Province

Key Laboratory of 3D Micro/Nano Fabrication and Characterization of Zhejiang Province is established in February 2019 under the official approval from the Science and Technology Agency of Zhejiang Province. The lab marks one of the first batch of essential labs in Westlake University. The lab brings cohort resources from the school-level research platform for advanced micro-nano processing and testing in the School of Engineering and the university-wide research platform, the Westlake Center for Micro/Nano Fabrication. The existing facilities are hosted by the No.2 Building in Yunqi Campus with an overall floor area of 3,000 square meters and a total value of 60 million CNY.

The interdisciplinary-minded lab sets its key missions on the innovative research and application of 3D micro-nano processing and characterization technology based on the existing surface processing processes enabled micro-nano structures and components, coupled with its vision to create the futuristic synergy of the microelectronics integration technology and the micro-nano processing.

Key Laboratory of Structural Biology of Zhejiang Province

The research in the Key Laboratory of Structural Biology of Zhejiang Province is focusing on biomacromolecular machines and membrane proteins related to important biological processes or human diseases. We are working to understand the assembly and regulation of biomacromolecular machines and the structure-function relationship of membrane proteins, and to explore their posttranslational modification and protein-protein interaction patterns under physiological and pathological conditions. Based on these studies, we are carrying out studies such as molecular dynamics simulation, protein design, small molecule tool design and drug development, with the aim of understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of human diseases and speeding up the development of effective treatments.

Key Laboratory for Quantum Materials of Zhejiang Province

The Key Laboratory for Quantum Materials of Zhejiang Province was established in January 2020, with approval by the Science Technology Department of Zhejiang Province, as a consortium of multiple research groups and labs in condensed matter physics and the Instrumentation and Service Center for Physical Sciences of the University.

By joining forces of Westlake University on fabrication, measurement, theory and computation of quantum materials, and taking advantage of the technical strength in quantum materials synthesis and characterization of the Instrumentation and Service Center for Physical Sciences, the Key Laboratory seeks for fundamental and technical breakthroughs on related foci and bottlenecks in quantum materials research. Specifically, four priority research directions are focused on (i.e., harnessing topological states for groundbreaking surface properties, exploring novel bulk properties of correlated electron materials, manipulating quantum effects in low dimensional nanostructures, developing cutting-edge tools to accelerate discovery and technological deployment of quantum materials), which include in total 10 key points and 30 projects for research in the early stage, paving the way to better understanding quantum materials and exploiting their rich technological potentials.

Westlake Multidisciplinary Research Initiative Center

Conducting original research that may have significant impacts to the community is one of the missions of Westlake University. A new Center, the Multidisciplinary Research Initiative Center (MRIC), is formed to further fulfill this mission. MRIC is set up to facilitate the collaboration of the PIs from different disciplines and encourage PIs to take high-risk, high-reward original scientific research. We anticipate this center will become the innovative powerhouse of Westlake University, fostering innovative research ideas that may ultimately benefit the whole society.

Westlake MRIC is calling for proposals from Westlake University principal investigators (PIs) four times a year (in January, April, July and October). Each PI can only participate in one team and submit one proposal. Each project could have two or three PIs from different disciplines.
